Hi all I've always had dry skin on my body in the colder weather, but since I've had RA I started with a pink dry patch underneath my right eyebrow. I then got the same thing underneath my left eye and at one point it got so bad it went a purple colour and I looked like I had a black eye. Whenever I went to the GP about it, it disappeared! Eventually I got prescribed Diprobase. In the last few weeks my forehead, down the sides of my eyebrows, all of the skin underneath my eyebrows, and the tops of my cheeks have been really really tight and dry. I have a really good skincare routine - cleanse and moisturise twice a day with Clarins products. I've also become more spotty The Diprobase helps but it doesn't seem to have any lasting effect and usually an hour or 2 after applying it my skin has gone all dry and flaky again. Do any of you have any skincare products to recommend or know of things I should avoid to help with this? Gem x Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

Hi Gem Not experienced this myself so have no idea whether it is RA related. I know Clarins is expensive but could it be too strong for your skin now? Have you tried alternatives or even extra vitamins of some sort. Clutching at straws for you, you've probably thought of this yourself. Angie Be yourself - everyone else is taken. XX

right i have bad skin . Now docs may not be trained in good skin care . the dryer the skin the greaser the ointment needs to be is why stuff like dipo base e.45 may not work . So you may need to wash your face/skin with a emulsifying ointment such as Hydromol then pat dry and the rub some on so dry patches are coverd you may need to put this on every hour . once its got a little better and then you can put it on less .Sun and wind heat will dry out the dry patches . i keep some with me all the time .So what if it looks like lard use it .that all a red face . And yes if you are posh no make up . products from fancy shops usealy don,t work .And people from fancy skin care places don,t know enough There should be an dermatolliy nurse out in the comattity .The chemist would know if doc does not . Which my docter has never heard off yet she does a clinc in the surgary .But they have more time then docs or hospitals and might come to your home and can give you creams to try and keep seeing you till you have cracked it . if dipo base does not work it needs to be greasy so it stays on skin it may be not realted to R.A but you have it because the iummue systum is wonky .And you may be prone to getting such things as with people with P.A get other skin promlems christine The chocolate eating housewife ...The washer woman .....naughty lady

Angie Dont use fancy skin products but talk to an dermalogy nurse which should be conceted with your docs if not a chemist will know and self refure . THE DRYER THE SKIN THE GREASY the prouduct you should use and every hour like emulsiling ointment to wash face and to put on after wards weather or not its posh or not . dry skin on face you really can not do posh . and it looks like lard but better then a dry red flaking face . Hi Gem
I have had the same skin problems as yourself below my left eye brow. I have tried many different creams, oils etc but it has always come back.
Since then I have been using Pakua lotion followed by Pakua cream, only for a short time and it has knocked all the skin problems on the head. FABULOUS!!! It is made from natural herbal substances and has a powerful skin rejuvenation action. The lotion is anti-inflammatory so is also great for cooling hot R.A joints.
Best of luck and hope you get some relief.
Best wishes Rebecca

Pure cocoa butter is great for very dry skin. You can use the Palmers lotions but I find them too thin. You can buy pure cocoa butter from African Caribbean shops (online or on the street).
Pure coconut oil is another great product used by African Caribbean women. Again you can buy it in its pure, solidified form in African Caribbean or Asian shops.
If you can't get anything like the above (they're both cheap as chips) then try an oatmeal and milk (preferably live yoghurt) poultice once a day in the evening.
Another option is a carrot and honey poultice. A good runny honey and grated carrot is all you need - the amounts don't matter, just make it up until it feels 'right'. Honey is a great antibiotic/antiseptice, used to treat open wounds, and carrot is used to treat sore and dry nipples during breastfeeding.
All the above are tried and tested - I used to have awful dry skin - but I don't use anything containing animal products or tested on animals.
Don't use vaseline - it breeds germs and can give you a hairy face!

Hi Gem,
I have not had any problem with dry skin on my face. So some good ideas mentioned - so good luck to you.
I do have dry skin in general though on legs feet and body. My doc has given me a showers wash and a double base cream to rub on. Quite helpful. I have also used after a shower Johnson baby oil. Rub it on body whilst wet, then lie on the bed and dry off naturally- Body then feels good.

Hi Gem Dry skin can come with RA, it can also be brought on by certain medications. As the dry areas appear to be spreading I think I would be inclined to firstly seek the advice of your rheumatology team who will be more able to ascertain the reason for the problem and failing that seek a referral to dermatology. The cause of the problem needs to be determined and a suitable remedy provided. Sometimes trying to find your own answer can make things even worse! Herbal products, whilst assumed to be natural and good for you, have been known to cause significant problems. The ingredients in some products can occasionally react with medication so always worth getting the advice of a professional. Good luck, hope you get some help with this, Lyn x

Adding to what LynW said avoid any essential oils as they can react and cause more problems than they solve. Mixed incorrectly they can cause serious illness (Lavender oil is strong enough to bring on a delayed miscarriage). Aqueous creams have just been proven to make eczma and similar conditions worse. As these have been recommended by dermatologists and GPs for decades it just goes to show that nobody's an expert. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11564662

Fab, thanks for all your help...yet another thing to add to the list for my next rheumatology appointment! I've bought some Simple facecare stuff in the meantime thinking maybe the cleanser I use is too strong and stripping any moisture out of the skin. xx Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

And write to the hospital . Oh yes take a picture but with a real cambra for a good close up and detail . My nurse is very good if i am in a muddle and cant get my red face pink i only have to ring . Gem , funnily enough .. when i went to my first Rheumy Consultant appt (This was before i took any medications!).. he looked at my elbow and said what is that? pointing to my left elbow that was red and dry with the skin cracking up :O ...i hadn't been bothered with it as although it looked red/ purple and caused me some pain , it was nothing compared to everything else . He then told me to see GP and wrote a letter stating this to look into Psoriasis . The GP wasn't concerned either , but gave me a cream called Dovonex , which has cleared it up no end ..although when i stop with the cream it comes back eventually. Must admit my skin on my nose and forehead is getting drier too .. so will have to mention that too before i put the cream there :) May not be the same but the elbow issue certainly strikes a chord with me :) All the best Rich "The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

Gem
I suffer from rosecea which is a bright red face, spots and patches of dry skin. My GP referred me to a dermatologist as my skin really started to play up the more medication I was taking. I saw the dermatologist and she gave me all sorts of pills and potions and my skin has never been better!! Better to speak to the experts. My dermatologist said she sees lots of people with rheumatoid arthritis as they are prone to skin conditions.
Hope you get your skin cleared up soon as it can be very annoying.
Take care
Jackie xx

Nearly everytime I see my consultant he asks if my skin is dry. I had dry skin prior to being diagnosed with RA, especially my hands in the winter, they crack and sometimes bleed they get so bad. I can always predict when the weather is going to turn really cold with what state my hands are in.
I did ask the girl who does my nails about you Gem, she's a fully qualified beautician. She said without seeing you she couldn't really comment on what you should do. Said that lots of things could be causing your dry skin. Loads of things were mentioned. Could be:
Change of weather Working in an environment where the air was dry (heating being put on) Washing your face too much Body being dehydrated Skin being dehydrated. Two products that you might be using reacting with one and another and then................Medication that you are taking or being ill Other things I can't remember
Take your pick which one
